UKIP candidate accused of false election claim
A FORMER UK Independence Party candidate has appeared in court accused of standing for election while disqualified from doing so.
Paul Clarke, 28, of Portland Drive, Merstham, appeared before magistrates in Redhill on Friday but made no plea.
The charge relates to his standing in the Reigate & Banstead borough council elections in May this year, in which he came fourth out of five candidates, receiving 236 votes in Merstham ward.
By his own request, Mr Clarke will appear at Guildford Crown Court for the next hearing, with a date set for January 12.
